چکیده

Performing a fit to the available experimental data, we quantify the effect of long-distance contributions from penguin contractions in B0 → J/ψK0 decays. We estimate the deviation of the measured SCP term of the time-dependent CP asymmetry from sin 2β induced by these contributions and by the penguin operators. We find ∆S = 0.000±0.017 ([−0.035, 0.033] @ 95% probability).

Modeling Huddling Penguins

We present a systematic and quantitative model of huddling penguins. In this mathematical model, each individual penguin in the huddle seeks only to reduce its own heat loss. Consequently, penguins on the boundary of the huddle that are most exposed to the wind move downwind to more sheltered locations along the boundary. In contrast, penguins in the interior of the huddle neither have the spac...

Prognostic Indicators of Rehabilitation Outcomes for Adult African Penguins ( Spheniscus Demersus).

:  The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds facility near Cape Town, South Africa, receives ∼900 African Penguins ( Spheniscus demersus) for rehabilitation every year. Data were analyzed from 3,657 adult African Penguins over a 12-yr period (2002-13), and multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate whether individual history and clinical parameter...

Pond use by captive African penguins (Spheniscus demersus) in an immersive exhibit adjacent to human bathers.

Nonhuman animals in zoos are exposed to a continuous human presence, which affects their behaviors and welfare. However, little is known about what role the "visitor effect" has on penguins in captivity. The African penguin (Spheniscus demersus) is an endangered species commonly housed in zoos worldwide. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the abundance of human bathers could reduce t...

At‐sea distribution and habitat use in king penguins at sub‐Antarctic Marion Island

King penguins make up the bulk of avian biomass on a number of sub-Antarctic islands where they have a large functional effect on terrestrial and marine ecosystems. The same applies at Marion Island where a substantial proportion of the world population breeds. In spite of their obvious ecological importance, the at-sea distribution and behavior of this population has until recently remained en...

Changes in diet and trophic position of a top predator 10 years after a mass mortality of a key prey

After the disappearance of primary prey, seabirds exhibit gradually decreased breeding performance, and eventually the population size drops. Results are presented of an investigation into the diet of little penguins (Eudyptula minor) at Phillip Island, Australia, during a period when their key prey, pilchard (Sardinops sagax), declined dramatically. Data from stomach flushing (1982–2006) were ...

Penguins are attracted to dimethyl sulphide at sea.

Breeding Spheniscus penguins are central place foragers that feed primarily on schooling pelagic fish. They are visual hunters, but it is unclear how they locate prey patches on a coarse scale. Many petrels and storm petrels (Procellariiformes), the penguins' closest relatives, use olfactory cues to locate prey concentrations at sea, but this has not been demonstrated for penguins. Procellariif...
